I’ve heard both sides of the argument for and against the idea that If you do something for 21 days, it will become habit. While some say it works and others say it doesn’t, I say it is all psychological. In the end, it depends on the person and whether or not they want to break a bad habit or create a good one.
This three-week rule is how I became a morning person. I have always been a night owl with an insomnia problem. Since I was in grade school, I’ve clung onto the night to read, to listen to music, to write poems, to be on Tumblr, to blog, to do homework, to catch up on studying after working all day… (the list goes on). I already knew pulling all-nighters is dangerous for my health, but I did it anyway thinking I’m young… I’ll survive. But now that I think of it, I’m pretty sure I developed all sorts of psychological and physical problems from not sleeping. In my college years, my anxiety heightened to new levels of self-harm and depression blanketed my thoughts unexpectedly. Also, while I was doing my best to go to the gym and stay in shape, I was still destroying my body by not sleeping and giving myself time to recover.
You’re all probably thinking, “Duh Rachel, how did you not realize this before?”
No worries, I’m thinking the same thing. Now I have the consequences of getting muscle aches easily and having to work twice as hard namaste and stay calm and collected so my anxiety does not come back. Sleep is so important. I say so and I know so, and if you still don’t believe me, Ariana Huffington says so too (in my favorite commencement speech ever).
She says, “Sleep your way to the top.” (literally sleep, not sexually sleep your way to the top…) I want a better life for myself. I want to make my way to this figurative top and be amongst my role models like Ariana Huffington, Mindy Kaling, Janet Yellen, Sheryl Sandberg, Michelle Obama, Susan Wojcicki, Jen Glantz, Michelle Phan, and Barbra Streisand. I will get there someday, and I will begin building that strong foundation with sleep, exercise, a strong work ethic, and perseverance. But above all sleep. Because if I’m not well-rested, I would not have the energy during the day to keep working effectively. It is all about balance and knowing what is best for you.
So, how did I become a morning person? I woke up everyday between 5:00 to 7:00 AM for the last three and a half weeks. In the first two weeks, my boyfriend Mark helped me by waking me ever morning to get breakfast and go to school with him. I would drop him off to his winter classes, then I would doing work and blog at Starbucks until he finished at noon. There were days when I was livid with Mark for waking me because I was so exhausted from workouts the night before, but I’m glad I stuck to it. I even woke early on the weekends! After his classes, I would take a 15-minute power nap and get back to being productive throughout the day. Then, I would force myself to be in bed (pajamas on) with no electronics by 11pm.
I finally came to the realization that I need my sleep and I need it at night. So, for the past three weeks I’ve been working really hard to rise early and catch my Zs. And this is how I became a morning person… Are you a morning person? Or a night person?
